This painting had been perhaps 8 incarnations and then became "Striation" (see its picture in lists) but it seemed both too tame and too indebted to Agnes Martin (even though I was not consciously thinking of her). So I took it back into the studio. A memory came by and fixed itself to the painting, then. I kept trying to make the painting cohere-- it was rejected by a juried show and I thought, "that's it," and my husband and I destroyed it. Sometimes a painting just needs to go away.
