The Odalisque is Leaving Grasse
monotype, collage, pencil and pen
11 x 15"
2011

The palm tree is from the view out our window in Grasse, France, with the Mediterranean in the distance. The odalisque has become an image for my writing and artwork; she represents, in part, the desire of one culture to travel to another, sometimes truly living in that second place, sometimes romanticizing that other culture. Western artists like Delacroix and Matisse actually visited Northern Africa; Ingres did not.
