Picasso's 1907 "Demoiselles d'Avignon" is a leap forward in his art, in all art, that he never quite knew how to capture. He had come so far, but he never went through to abstraction, he did not stay with Cubism, and he returned to a lovely neo-classicism later in his life. I think that we all think we know the painting really well... but the women truly are as isolated from one another as they were from their artist-creator.
