Square Still Life with Mended Seam
acrylic, collage, fabric and thread, tacks, and pencil on wood

The painting underneath is "It was a Japanese Wind." I decided that it wasn't strong enough, and began to paint an overlay of an object I had found on Watch Hill beach, together with a dream I'd had about mended seams. I sewed bits of found and purchased fabrics together to show the sewn lines... because, as Yeats wrote, "Nothing can be sole or whole/That has not been rent." Then, months later, I felt the painting still did not work. I have painted it out completely and it is now "Stereoptical Study II."
