Sardines for Frank O'Hara
watercolor, inktense blocks and pencil on paper
11' X 14"
2018

In "Why I Am Not a Painter," Frank O'Hara wrote about seeing a painting by his friend Mike Goldberg. Sardines were in it, and the poet was surprised, but the painter said "it needed something there." They disappear from the final version...and O'Hara writes 12 poems called "Orange" that doesn't mention oranges... and Goldberg's painting is called "Sardines." Just because it isn't there doesn't mean it isn't there.
