From a Vineyard in Sonoma to the Bar at the Folies-Bergere
acrylic and pencil on wood
2' x 4'
2012

This painting began as "A Vineyard in Sonoma," with vines, a square, and mustard blossoms, shown at the dot real estate gallery in Oakland in 2010. But it began to seem to me a little too stiff and predictable, so I took Manet's "Bar" as my template and shifted the painting to an indoor settoing; the x's are the barmaid and her reflection, and the light here is from chandeliers.
