A Sketch After J.S.S.: The Two Vases of Edward Darnley Boit
acrylic and oilstick on canvas
24" x 24"
2012

This is really a sketch, a painted drawing, taking Sargent's "The Daughters of Edward Darnley Boit" as a model. I am looking at the forms and abstracting them. The four pinafores of the girls, in the original, come forward more than my forms do here. But I think the principle interest here might just have been the Japanese vases... despite the fact that they are cut off and partly in shadow in Sargent's painting, he painted them with great attention and precision, and they pull you into the depths.
