(For full description of book, see "POMPEII series: R & G"). When we stayed in France in 1999-2000, we lived in a hamlet with a bread oven, which was used once a year. But it had once been typical of ovens in every small village: used daily by the baker, and later in the day by the families cooking their dinners in the slowly-cooling ovens. I imagine Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas working with such an oven during World War I.
