My filmmaker son alerted me to a taped interview with the philosopher Gilles Deleuze. In this interview, Deleuze discusses what it means to have an idea, and he uses examples from Dostoevsky to Kurasawa to clarify. Sometimes, abstract art is created from poured paint, as with Pollock or Frankenthaler. With other artists, there's an initial idea. I am one of those people; I can't just approach a canvas randomly. The idea may change as I work, but it is always there, and it relates, quite intensely, to me.
